About English Ocean

English Ocean is a free English grammar site for learners anywhere in the world.

Each page teaches one rule in plain English and then asks you to use it in 20 short questions. Every answer is marked at once, and every answer has a reason. The site has no account, no email list and no paywall.

Who it is for

Learners from A1 to C2 who want to fix the grammar mistakes that survive years of study. The pages suit self-study, and teachers may print them for class use.

How the site is built

  • One rule per page, with the rule, examples, a common-mistakes box and a 20-question drill.
  • Answers are marked the moment you choose them, with the rule explained underneath.
  • Every question and explanation is visible in the page, so the drills also work without JavaScript.
  • The site is static HTML. It is fast, and it works on a slow connection.

Original content only

Every explanation, example, question and answer on this site was written for English Ocean. Nothing is copied from the British Council, Cambridge, Oxford, Perfect English Grammar, EF or any other course. Where the site paraphrases a public standard, such as the CEFR level descriptors, it says so on the page.

Privacy in one line

The drills run in your browser. The site does not store your answers and does not ask who you are. Read the privacy policyfor the details.
